Conference October 23-25, 2015 - Program and Schedule
This weekend is a free, participatory, interdisciplinary, community and arts based festival entitled "The Art of Resistance and Liberation". The conference is taking place in the territories of the Coast Salish and Straight Salish Peoples at the University of Victoria. There will be some events that take place in the community on Saturday afternoon.
The pre-conference starts off at 12:30 Friday Oct. 23 at UVic with workshops by the Beehive Collective and the ICA and followed by a short reception at UVic. There is a 9am Saturday morning opening ceremony in the First Peoples House, followed by workshops all day Saturday and Sunday including drum making, puppet making, A social justice walking tour of Victoria, "seed bombing", food insecurity, and many more creative and participatory events. See the program for details.
It is an interdisciplinary conference aimed at uniting community, students, and faculty to share their efforts in "creating change and working towards equity in the world through education"- the focus is on activism and radical education. We really want to reach out to people in different disciplines who are engaging people formally, informally and non formally on critical issues of humans and all other beings, with an underlying goal of rethinking the capitalist paradigm we are stuck in and envision a better way of living and treating people and the other species with whom we coexist in this planet. Fundamental to this, especially in Canada is the ongoing imperialist colonisation of indigenous peoples. We hope that this will underlie all presentations, and we encourage strongly discussion around colonisation, resurgence, allyship and decolonisation.
There will be a cabaret at Solstice Cafe on Saturday evening. Anyone who wants to share a special talent is welcome to contact us and we will try to get you on the line up. Post-Harper poetry encouraged.
