Friday, August 2, 2019
10:00 AM to 05:00 PM
Tsawout First Nations gym, 7728 Tetayut Rd.
Tsawout Community Centre
Summer PowWow season is coming and myself and David Chaplin have been honoured by the Sampson family in the role of co-ordinating volunteers for the 25th annual Yellow Wolf Powwow.
The Yellow Wolf Powwow tradition extends back to the family's matrilineal roots in the Nez Perce territory of Idaho and provides a forum for young Songhees , Esquimault and W'SANEC dancers and others on the powwow circuit to learn and to perform their dances. share in ceremony and carry on cultural traditions in a colourful, vibrant and supportive community gathering.
The whole community, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, is warmly welcomed to enjoy the weekend of traditional Powwow song and dance competition, ceremony, prayer, story-telling, food, vendor booths and comraderie in the beautiful environment of the Tsartlip territory.
After 25 years of organizing the powwow, members of the Sampson family are reaching out for support from friends and community members to help with many of the volunteer jobs before and during the event, including set-up, security, waste and recycling, parking, shuttling, signage, bathroom cleanup, food concession and clean-up of the powwow grounds.
I am reaching out to you to see if you would like to be part of this awesome event!. The family is keen on enlisting a solid group of volunteers ASAP I will use this site to keep you all posted for details as the planning moves ahead, but if you can just set these dates aside on your calendar, and let me know if you can make it, that would be great!
This is a great and really fun opportunity for non-Indigenous allies to be able to immerse yourself in an Indigenous cultural space and to practise some reconciliACTION in solidarity with Indigenous cultural continuity and to spend a weekend performing some of the volunteer duties that will help make the weekend a great time for all. If you can only make one day or a 3-4 hour shift, that is fine!
Please let me know if you can help out and I will send you a volunteer form to fill out. You are also welcomed to attend meetings, if you want to be included in that!
Much thanks, hiske siem,
Bobby

All Hands on Deck: Action Against Cruise Ship Pollution
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
02:00 PM to 06:00 PM
Canada Place (Waterfront and Howe) Vancouver, BC
Canada Place
A passenger’s carbon footprint triples in size when taking a cruise. Cruise ships carry the equivalent of a small town directly into some of the world’s most beautiful — and vulnerable — ecosystems.
Join us to speak up and out about how consumer choices we make affect all of us. With the welfare of all creatures on the planet at stake, there is no excuse for such excessive and avoidable pollution.
Goals: Our primary goals are public education and awareness around the climate crisis and the cruise ship industry specifically. Since the Vancouver terminal is at Canada Place, a high traffic area for tourists, it is an opportunity for broader awareness and XR brand recognition. i.e. We are here, and we are serious.
Meet starting at 2 pm in front of Canada Place
Look for the giant CLIMATE CRISIS ELEPHANT
(it will be upside down on a stretcher)
*We’re looking for 4 more people to wear XR t-shirts and hand out information near terminal entrances
*Everyone else: we will have a procession up and down the side of the road. Feel free to dress in funeral attire, doctors and nurses uniforms, or other similar emergency wear.
*Bring signs and your own drums

07:00 PM to 09:00 PM
Student Union Bldg, 3800 Finnerty Rd
Cinecenta Films
Join us on Thursday, August 27th, for a film screening of Patagonia’s ARTIFISHAL at Cinecenta theatre at the University of Victoria! Doors open at 6:20pm and the film will start at 7pm.
There will be a Q&A with Aaron Hill, our Executive Director, and Misty MacDuffee from Raincoast Conservation Foundation following the film.
“ARTIFISHAL is a film about people, rivers, and the fight for the future of wild fish and the environment that supports them. It explores wild salmon’s slide toward extinction, threats posed by fish hatcheries and fish farms, and our continued loss of faith in nature.”
As an organization, we advocate to remove open-net fish farms from our coastal waters. Patagonia does an amazing job shedding a light on the problems created by fish farms.
Admission prices are as follows:
UVSS Students: $5.75
Seniors (65 & older), Children (12 & under): $5.75
UVic Alumni, Faculty, Staff and guest (1 only) of above: $6.75
