Join the Victoria BC (Lekwungen territorites) action of Extinction Rebellion Canada’s nationwide #BridgeOut campaign!

 

The #BridgeOut campaign points out that the bridge to the future is being demolished by big oil, and oily politicians. Actions will block bridges in multiple Canadian cites on Monday October 7. We will meet at the small plaza at Store Street and Pandora Avenue at 3:30, and move onto the Johnson Street Bridge shortly after. Emergency vehicles, transit buses, cyclists and pedestrians will be allowed through. Join us on the bridge any time before 6 pm!

 

Please bring a sign, and a friend or five! Dress warmly. Urge commuters to get out of their cars and take a bus Monday.

'The Future of BC’s Ancient Forests' will delve into the pressing social, cultural, political, and environmental issues that impact – and are impacted by – the continued loss of BC’s rare and endangered old-growth forests.

 

The evening will include presentations by the AFA’s TJ Watt and Andrea Inness outlining the urgent need to protect BC's old-growth forests and current opportunities for policy change. You’ll also hear the perspectives of guest speakers from across the ancient forest conservation movement.

 

A Q&A panel discussion will give both in-person and online audiences a unique opportunity to pose questions to our expert panel about BC's ancient forests, their future, and what it will take to protect them. This is a two-day anti-racism workshop rooted in and centering decolonization and Indigenous sovereignty. The workshop will include multiple sections run by BIPOC in our community who will be teaching, discussing, and engaging with attendees on how we do anti-racist and decolonizing work. Each facilitator will present their section in any way they choose, be it through painting or art, through dialogue and open discussion, interactive small groups, or whatever the facilitator chooses.

Beach and Underwater Cleanup

Join us for our FIRST EVER combined shoreline and underwater cleanup!!! Surfrider UVic will be handling the shoreline portion of the cleanup with the support of Surfrider Vancouver Island, the UVic SCUBA Club will be diving in the water to clean up debris, and the UVic SUP Club and UVic Kayak Club will be providing the divers with surface support, ferrying trash from the divers to the shore on their paddle boards and kayaks (how cool is that)!

 

The UVic Scuba Club will be providing divers for the event, but we also encourage members of the local diving community to join us as well!

 

Surfrider UVic encourages members and non-members, students and non-students, to attend the shoreline cleanup portion of the event.

 

We will have a table set up near the parking lot in Cadboro-Gyro Park where we will meet just before 11am (look for the blue Surfrider logo). Divers should be there a bit earlier to set up their gear and have a site debriefing.
