Salish Sea and W̱SÁNEĆ Gathering
A Day to Acknowledge Our Connections
On Sunday, May 29, W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) First Nation, in partnership with Sierra Club BC and the CRD, invite everyone to join them for a one-day gathering in the spirit of Nétsamaát (we are all one).
Keynote speaker will be Grand Chief Stewart Phillip!
This is an opportunity to celebrate and educate about W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) and Salish Sea Cultures, acknowledge the environmental threats we face, and discuss how we collaborate to move forward. The gathering will include workshops, film presentations, panels and dialogues as well as family-friendly cultural events throughout the day! Some activities being discussed include an Elders circle, SENĆOŦEN language cafe, salmon pit cook, singers and drummers, reef net presentation, canoes and paddle, arts and crafts, and gathering local foods.
Confirmed presenters include W̱JOȽEȽP Chief Don Tom, Lummi Nations’ Whiteswan group and youth, reef-net expert Dr. Nick Claxton, the Clam Garden Network, SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Friends of San Juan, and Ocean Network Canada.
We will be engaging people in workshops and community discussions about the proposed LNG terminals and pipelines projects, as well as reconciliation, decolonization and sustainable, green energy opportunities.
Bringing Indigenous peoples together with the local non-Aboriginal community, this gathering will actively build solidarity around our mutual concerns for the safety and protection of the coast. This presents a unique opportunity to deepen learning and understanding between neighbors about culture and tradition, sustainability opportunities, and challenges we face together.
