25th Anniversary Walbran Valley Convergence
JULY 30 - JULY 31

This July marks the 25th anniversary of the Walbran valley road blockades, the Road Stops Here Campaign, a successful series of non-violent direct action(s): tree-sits, road barricades, office sit-ins, hunger strikes, banner hangings and public protests that were pivotal in the creation of the 13,000 ha Carmanah/Walbran Provincial Park.
A quarter of a century later, three generations of concerned citizens join together to halt the needless destruction of the world-class ancient temperate rainforest in the heart of the watershed, in the beautiful Central Walbran valley/ Pacheedaht/Qwa-ba-diwa territory foolishly left out of the park in '94, and still, after all the backlash, slated for logging by Surrey-based Teal Jones, who has been recklessly clearcut logging the steep sidehills to the height of land, along park boundaries, on the south side of Walbran river. Enough is enough!
All are welcome for this weekend of camping, celebration of place and all the good work being done by so many at this mass Convergence in the sweetest time of the year, in one of the sweetest places on the island, the best of the last, the last of the best, of the great ancient red cedar forest.
Join the Friends of Carmanah/Walbran for this festive gathering to join the past with the future, in our common cause to end old-growth logging, once and for all, in the Walbran valley.
Check out the Facebook event page for more info and ride-sharing.

Wheels for the Walbran
Transportation Fund
Facilitating Access to the Heart of the Walbran Valley
MESSAGE FROM BOBBY ARBESS, FRIENDS OF THE CARMANAH WALBRAN (FOCW):
It is a huge privilege and yet a spiritual necessity at the same time to be in such sweet places in the natural world, which were once, before colonization, almost the whole world. We need to figure out a way to make it easier for folks to get out to Kax:ics/ Walbran valley.
It seems that one of the biggest obstacles for people getting into experience the natural splendour of the remnant ancient temperate rainforest is lack of transportation.
Most people don't have access to the kind of vehicles required to travel down rough logging roads into the remote heart of this popular and still threatened portion of the traditional Pacheedaht and Qwa-ba-diwa territory.
To overcome that barrier, the Friends of Carmanah/Walbran are opening a fund to subsidize the cost of transportation to this threatened ecological paradise, 3 1/2 hours from Victoria.
FOCW could then purchase a small bus or passenger van for people who have no other way to get out there to experience the magic and soul medicine of this place.
.
Please contribute to Wheels for the Walbran-Transportation Fund, so anyone, regardless of means, can enjoy the best of what's left of our South Vancouver island's ancient forests--and build our movement to protect it!

Farmland Protection Coalition Update
From Cheryl:
Two decisions on pieces of ALR land in Langford from the City of Langford block exclusion of 1/2 of all the remaining ALR land in Langford. Both properties released by the ALC were excluded based on poorer quality of soils present. This is sad news but at least poorer soil quality was cited as the reason for the unanimous decision of the three members of Vancouver Island ALC Board to exclude the lands. And again in the decision it was mentioned the City of Langford's planned charge of $13.45 per sq. meter applied to land after exclusion at the time of rezoning and going toward a City of Langford ALR fund was in no way part of their decision-making. That Langford ALR fund is yet to be determined particularly regarding what and/or how the money would be spent on improving the ALR.
