Bill Doherty's Memorial

A Celebration of Bill’s life
will be held Saturday October 1st from 2 – 5 p.m.
at the BC Government Employees’ Union Auditorium
2994 Douglas St Victoria.

Oct 4, 1929 – June 27, 2016

William Patrick (Bill) Doherty was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Northern Ontario. He worked in logging, prospecting and mining in numerous communities and camps across Canada, including hand mining coal in Northern BC. He became a blaster in underground mines and was active in the radical Mine Mill Union, fighting for better health, safety and wages.

Bill met Gudrun Gislason in Vancouver and they married May 1962 in Port Alberni and soon moved to Victoria where they lived until Gudrun passed away in 2014. Bill was a great father to children Sandra and Eric, with whom he shared his love of hiking and camping.

Bill started working for the City of Victoria after the copper mine at Jordan River flooded, and worked as a pipefitter in the waterworks department until retirement. He was always active in the Victoria Labour Council, and served as President of CUPE local 50 multiple times. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and family, and generously shared his skills as a handyman.

Bill worked hard to make the world a better place. He was there whenever people were working together for workers’ rights, peace and disarmament, international solidarity, and social and environmental justice. He was active in the Victoria Central America Support Committee (CASC) for many years. Gudrun and Bill opened their house for many meetings, parties and guests.

Bill was pre-deceased by his wife Gudrun and brothers John (who died at age 18 in a work accident) and Edward (Auli). He leaves children Sandra (John Duder), Eric (Maryann Abbs), granddaughter Emily Duder, brother Peter (Brigitta), sister Binnie Pringle (Norman), and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
