Municipal elections are right around the corner! r1

Municipal elections
are literally right around the corner!

On October 20, we head to the polls and eco-socialists throughout the region are keen to have those who share our values win seats on their respective councils so they can strive to place people and the planet before profit!

Although SEA has no official endorsement policy, we still feel it is important to ensure progressive voices are heard at the municipal level.

We encourage you to do the research necessary to make an informed decision on election day.

To that end, we offer the following candidate details, for information purposes only.
(We are not telling you who to vote for but just wanting to pass this information on to you at this critical time in the campaign!)      NOT SURE IF YOU ARE REGISTERED TO VOTE?

Priorities
  • Affordability
  • Housing

  • Governance
  • Making local government more accessible for everyone

I fled the civil war in Somalia and was a refugee for more than 20 years. Then Canada offered me a home. I want to serve as a Victoria city councillor to give people the same dignity and respect I was shown when I first arrived. I want to help create a more affordable, inclusive and thriving city.

Protect What You Love: People, Planet and Place

Priorities:

  • Sustainable land use and Ecosystem Management
  • Affordable Housing and Retirement Facilities
  • Safe, livable roads, bike paths, sidewalks and neighbourhoods.
  • Good Governance and Bylaw Enforcement

In one year’s time, I hope to be working with the CRD to implement a regional farmland-trust. I also hope to be developing an aggressive plan to tackle housing affordability, including exploring innovative new responses to homelessness. By the end of my term, I hope Saanich will have the best local housing strategy implemented and a regional food-security plan in place.

Priorities:

  • Community building
  • Safe streets
  • Good governance

Sustainability isn't just a catch phrase, it should be at the core of everything we do, informing our choices on everything from densification of housing, to encouraging active transport, to enforcing pollution bylaws through good governance.

Priorities:

  • Create more affordable housing
  • Improve transportation options
  • Protect parks, farmland, and natural environment for both current and future generations.

As a young person, I will be inheriting the long-term impacts of the decisions we make today, and it's important to have that kind of perspective at the council table as we address the major issues such as the lack of affordable housing, farmland and environmental protection, inadequate car-free transportation options, and more.

I’m running for a position on Council because I want to build on the excellent work of our last Council.
I believe we have a strong Official Community Plan, and will work to maintain its relevant vision.
I support Metchosin’s role as a volunteer-run, debt-free, green, rural municipality within an increasingly employee-run, indebted, urban Capital Regional District.
I’m a good listener, and believe that the best decisions can only be made after hearing from all community members.
I love Metchosin, and would welcome the opportunity to continue to work on maintaining its rural nature, agricultural community, and fiscal prudence.

And don't forget the coming referendum on
Proportional Representation!
