Green New Deal Townhall
Thursday, May 23rd from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm The Fernwood Community Centre Gym,
1240 Gladstone Avenue
Here on Lekwungen Territories we’re joining hundreds of communities across the country to define what a Green New Deal in Canada should look like! Please join us on Thursday, May 23rd to be a part of this conversation!
As you may have heard a coalition of groups recently launched a campaign for a Green New Deal for Canada, a plan to tackle climate change and inequality at the same time! This means meeting our climate targets by transitioning to 100% renewable energy and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People while creating good jobs and ensuring dignity and justice for all!
Towns halls are being organized across the country the week of May 20 to May 26 to crowdsource ideas for what a Green New Deal for Canada should look like. Folks from Rise and Resist, the Social Environmental Alliance, Canadian Union of Postal Workers 850, First Metropolitan United Church, Rethinking Economics Victoria, and Women's March Canada: Victoria Chapter and are organizing a town hall on Lekwungen Territories on Thursday, May 23rd and we want you to be there!
We need everyone’s help to define what a Green New Deal should look like in our community as well as hear from others what their visions are. Everyone is welcome - the Green New Deal includes folks from all walks of life!
Here are the details
Time: 6:30-9:00 PM, Thursday, May 23rd
Location: The Fernwood Community Centre Gym, 1240 Gladstone Ave.
RSVP and up to date information: On Facebook or the event website
What to expect
At the town hall we will split into breakout groups that will record the “green lines, ”what they think must be included in a Green New Deal, and “red lines” things that cannot be a part of a Green New Deal.
We will use this information to narrow down a vision for a Victoria Green New Deal to be used for local organizing. We will also share it with the national coalition of groups called Pact for a Green New Deal who will be using the priorities identified in town halls across Canada to pressure the Federal government.
